I'm looking for a 88-91 ax-15 for my 4x4 Xj with a 4.0. Grinding into gears and being unable to down shift into 3'rd has taken the fun out of driving it, so it just sits now and has killed my motivation to build it.

Must be from these years because they used a 19/32" pilot tip, the 92-99's used a 3/4" pilot tip and will not work.

Must shift up/down without issues or grinding.

It took me a few months to find a AX15, might be a little difficult to find one that specific. i don't think its that expensive/difficult to change out the bushing if you have to go that route. I have an ax15 but its spoken for, but if you want to change out your internal slave cylinder to an external i have a full kit. Bellhousing, cross member and a few odds and ends.

By bushing are you referring to the pilot bearing? If so the 91 HO has a different crank and the 92+ pilot bearing will not fit. If I could figure out a bearing that fit the 92 input shaft and the 91 crank I would consider a newer trans.. Or if someone had a good 92+ 4.0/ax15/231 I'd even consider swapping it all out.

Make one out of oillite bronze to fit whatever you need, that's what car makers did for years, available at any good bearing house or FLAPS, get a bushing the correct size OD or larger, with a smaller ID, I'll be glad to machine it for you-Free. Good luck!
