Who else has seen it at the pumps? Iv filled up with it twice now, have'nt had any problems. No "seat of the pants" power loss.

Why would there be a power loss? The only benefit of the sulpher is lubrication of the pump and injectors, and they've put in additives to make up that loss...

Not so much a noticeable power loss, but they say to expect 2-3% loss in fuel mileage.
Suphur doesn't really do anything to lube. The process they use to remove the sulphur also removes alot of the natural lube out of the fuel... that's the issue. They are "supposed" to add in additives, though I have seen some tests down from fuel at the pumps and it was not close to Bosch standards for lube. I'm still running Power Service and waste oil in each tank... same as I have been for over a year.

A cleaner form of diesel fuel hits the pumps at retail stations nationwide on Sunday.
Buses, trucks and other diesel-engine vehicles will use the ultralow-sulfur fuel that contains 97 percent less sulfur than the old diesel and dramatically reduces diesel tailpipe pollution. "Now, when bus drivers pull in the garage and turn the bus off or start the engine, there is no black plume coming out of the tailpipe," said David Celebrezze, director of air and water special projects for the Ohio Environmental Council, a coalition of environmental groups. The new fuel reduces soot emissions by 10 percent in all diesel-driven vehicles. The 2007 diesel engines in heavy-duty highway vehicles using the fuel are expected to have emission reductions of more than 90 percent. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is predicting that the ultralow-sulfur fuel, once fully implemented, will help prevent about 8,300 premature deaths and tens of thousands of respiratory illnesses such as childhood asthma and bronchitis each year. Ultralow-sulfur diesel is "the single greatest achievement in clean fuel since lead was removed from gasoline more than 25 years ago," said Stephen L. Johnson, EPA administrator. Environmental experts agreed that the fuel is a step toward cleaning up vehicle pollution, but it might take time to see the full benefits. The majority of trucks and buses on the road are older and could be on the road for years, they said. In order for those older vehicles to produce greater reductions in emissions, they will need to be fitted for new emission controls. "Just by itself, the ultralow-sulfur diesel will provide minimal environmental benefits," said Sam Spofforth, executive director of the nonprofit Clean Fuels Ohio. "But when used in conjunction with new or retrofitted diesel engines, the fuel can provide substantial benefits." A 2006 or older engine would need to be retrofitted to take advantage of the full environmental benefits, Spofforth said. About 2.4 million barrels of the clean diesel is being produced each day, the EPA said. That represents more than 90 percent of the daily consumption of the highway diesel fuel. Some school districts and governments in Ohio have been using the ultralow-sulfur diesel for more than a year, Celebrezze said. "You could say it already has been road tested," he said. The EPA said it expects the ultralow-sulfur diesel to cost about 3 cents a gallon more than the old diesel. The Central Ohio Transit Authority started using the new diesel fuel this month. "It is a higher-cost fuel, no question about it," said William Lhota, COTA president and chief executive. "But it is a requirement, and it is a requirement we are going to comply with." This year, COTA started using biodiesel, a blend of diesel and soybean, in its 234 fixed-route buses. Biodiesel is supposed to reduce soot by 40 percent. The soy component in biodiesel provides an important lubricant that protects against wear and tear. Sulfur serves as the lubricant in traditional diesel fuel, so refiners are using an alternative in the ultralowsulfur diesel, Spofforth said.

Dunno. The other day some lady was loading up her kid in the back seat, car was close to my tailpipe. I waited in the truck a good 5 mins cause I didn't want to shoot a cloud of smoke in the car with the kid and all.

I've heard there is supposed to be a little less power, but wonder if anyone could feel 3% less power? Nate, got a link to any of those lubricity test on fuel from the pump? I'm interested if so.

I'll see if I can find them again LG. I just read it the other day, was on a link from the TDR webboard.
From what I read, ULSD was supposed to be at all pumps as of 15 October. It's been pumped into the tanker trucks since June, so we've been getting a mix of LSD/ULSD since this summer.

The ULS fuel is #1 diesel now. I've lost ALOT of power in my diesels. Tesoro is upgrading the Kenai plant to handle it BUT it won't have any #2 ready for 2 years when the upgrade is done.
I did manage to get a tank up of older #2 and it was able to pick up 2 full gears pulling the grade up the Willow side of Hatchers Pass compared to the ULS we're getting now. |
