If you can get a base permit, that's the place. Close and not much hunting pressure, besides that good luck on anyone telling their spot.

Hi,
I just can't seem to find a website that shoots me straight. The question I have about the hunting is.Do you have to lease land to hunt on,like here in Texas or is it a permit draw to see where u can hunt? I don't really understand where u can hunt.I know it goes by season like anywhere else in the U.S. I just don't understand the the location part? Where can u hunt,do u just pull off the side of the road and take off? I myself am going to hire a guide my first few years,I am just curious on hoe it works. I mean I have knuckle head friends here in Texas that seem to think you can just bag a moose off your back porch and be legal doing it( if you have liscense and tag) is this accurate.

Hmmm how to repond to these...

Well as far as the hunting area's of where you can and cannot hunt if you open the regs they are broken down into GMU game management units and they will have a list of the animals that you can hunt in that unit what the season is and any other restrictions

it will also say if it is open season requiring no tags or permits or if it is a registration, draw or tier hunt. besides all that if you did not put in for the drawings then your to late so your going to be looking for the REGISTRATION hunts

Find the GMU that you want to hunt and look for any special restrictions for the paticular area you wish to hunt if not and the area is not marked private property then have at it. Of course there are some other rules to follow ie shooting across a roadway. These are all laid out pretty cut and dry in the regs reading them will answer alot of the questions

anyways I am pretty tired so I may get sidetracked in my response here but onto pulling off the road and taking off... uh yeah if that are is open for what your hunting then yes you can hunt there.

Hiring a guide the first couple years um you will need to budget a couple thousand for that per yer and book them early cheaper to just find someone local make friends and watch them if they fail this fall find someone else next year

shooting a moose of your back porch well I have not shot a moose off my back porch but I have shot a black bear out the front door, two of my moose in the last three years have came less than 5 miles from my house but I do spend the time in the field to make that possible both before the season starts and after I get my moose I am still out with my hunting partner helping him get his well except for this year he got his before I got mine.

Moose for antlers.... doable but plan on putting in the time money and effort
Bear.... stupid easy they are practically vermin up here I did not shoot a bear this year as I have three in the freezer still
Wolf.... I would have to say unless you target wolves specifically you may not even see one for a number of years let alone get a chance to shoot one I took one five years ago and had it tanned I did not see another one on the ground until this fall in eureka for moose I did not have the want nor the heart to shoot it.

Other items you should take to mind are the need of a .30 caliber rifle preferably in a magnum chambering a good set of bino's I'm not saying expensive but a good set that works and a good knife. You may also consider a GPS to help you find your way.

Help these guys get started right who else has some advice?

A .300 or .338 will take down nearly anything here. You should be able to pick up a nice stainless rifle with decent optics for well under a grand if you look around a little.

As far as a handgun, you'd really only need one for bear protection. A 44 would be my first choice, although I prefer to carry a shotgun loaded with 00/1oz rifled slugs.

Hello,
The best way to find out if there are any big bucks in an area that you plan to hunt is to ask around. If you are looking for an area to hunt the best people to ask about the local deer population are other hunters, local farmers and ranchers, county agents, game wardens, feed store owners and even the people at the closest coffee shop or cafe. You are trying to find out if there are any big deer in the area and where they are. remember you are looking for big bucks, not a lot of deer. Some places are teeming with small bucks, this is not our goal. We are looking for that monster. If you are already on a lease or are committed in some way to one particular area find out the areas or stands where the biggest bucks have been harvested there the last few years, and if anyone has seen any big bucks in any one particular location. This is a good starting point. One word of caution though, deer stories can be as unreliable as fishing tales so try to get as much confirmation as you can.

Okay seriously this has to be a bot! Maybe not if they are on kodiak but I don't think they have what one would call a monster buck down in those parts. On another note though I think going to a local feed store and asking where the deer are would be hilarious.

looking for that monster is not typically our goal, its putting meat in the freezer.

Moose just for the "horns"? Dude, don't leave your groceries laying out there, that's wanton waste (an offense)! (and you guys are just mean for not telling him about an axe or hatchet)
