Call the airlines and find out what their discounts are...I know they aren`t much...but better than nothing I`m sure.

You can get a "bereavement" fare, which I don't think anyone has to die for.

Dont know what your situation is and I dont mean to sound morbid, but if there is a death you can get a lesser rate, but the bad part is you have to show proof that the person is deceased.

We had to do this when a relative was dying. Call the airline. They will ask for the name of the doctor, patient and hospital if the person is still alive and will put you on hold while they verify the information with the hospital. They will probably call the funeral home to verify a death. So have the information available when you call. We were able to get the cheapest available seat without the usual 21 days advance purchase. You might have to try different flights and different airlines to get the best deal. The fare can still be very expensive if there aren't any cheap seats left. We used USAir and were lucky to be able to get a flight the next day at the next to cheapest fare. The absoulte cheapest would have been military but there were none left.
Good luck.

And what sucks even more is that those discounts are off the top-ticket price, so if you find tickets for $300 and $1000 the discount will be off the $1000 seat. We saw this movie last fall when my wife's grandfather died. It ended up being cheaper buying one of the full price fares from Orbitz or CheapSeats or one of those web dealers than to take the special status discount from the airlines. Deserves looking into, but I'm going to bet the better fare comes from somewhere other than the airline itself.

I work for an airlines and just went and talked with our pass bureau(sp) and she said that they can help you out if there has been a death in the family. Other then that, there is not much that they will do, it sucks I know. I have two buddy passes, i would give ya one, but they are only good within Alaska.

Hey those tickets can be changed within 3 days with no $ penalties. I went through Alaska Airlines for the tickets, but you fly on continental. The number will be on the paper I give you if you need to change them.
