Default leaving for college, any words of advice?

I'll be leaving for college here soon and I'm looking for advice to make this journey worth wild. Here is a little bit of info about where I'm headed.

My total school populations is just under 1500. I'll be living in a town of just 1,800 people the majority of them over 60. Its world famous for having over 118 bars within county limits. I'll be in northern wisconsin along the boarder of michigan. So its gonna be cold and suck during the winter. I'm studying automotive technology and business management. It was cheaper then UAA per credit hour. I have a 2 story house with 2 bed, 2 bath, kitchen, living room basement and 1 1/2 garage. Rent is $250 a month.

There is alot of hunting, snow-mobile trails, ski-resorts and cheap booze.

any advice is appreciated.

Later

Sounds like a good opertunity to have a drink with some older wiser folks at the bar. They always tell the best stories anyway.

from my time in college i would say take it all in! the experiences you have while in college will be as good as the education you get! stay concentrated on classes but let loose once and a while and see what all that the area has to offer, the more you see in your life time the better educated you are IMO

I managed to graduate in 4 years with good standing despite the distractions of Hawaii and some insane friends.

Manage your time wisely. Try to get your assignments/studying done early that way you can spend way more time goofing off without worry. And always set time aside to relax. Stress is the worst thing that can happen at school. It can make grades and health drop. I don't think I ever spent more than an hour straight on any school work.

Try to schedule classes to start as late as you can. 7:30 German killed me my second year.

I think the normal week my senior was split like 15 hours of class, 40+hours of sleep, several hours at the gym, and 20+ hours of Halo

And don't rush it. I'm missing the experience a lot right now.

Work your a$$ off. Take every possible class you can. I always wish I had taken a few more classes. Would have had a double BS :-)

The school I was at was one of a handful that had a 4 yr gun smithing program. Wish I had taken some of those classes.

Lessons I learned in college:

Grants and scholarships you don't have to pay back, student loans you do, so try to stay aways from student loans.

Work hard during the week on the homework, and spend your money on traveling around during the weekend instead of on booze. Take in as much of the different way of life down there as you can. That can be as educational as the book work.

Procrastination on semester long projects cause way too much stress in your life. Start early and finish early.

Good luck.

Good area to be in, lot's to do (fishing, hunting, ext.). Just get a balance on school and play, and don't forget why you are there.

More true words to live by...I was blessed to begin college 45 miles from Yellowstone...it was awesome for road trips

More excellent advice! If anyone shouts "road trip" on Friday...take the trip...sometimes it ends up being a great life experience! (Don't ask)

Student loans are the DEVIL...unless you have support to pay them back after school...LOL

Don't be afraid to find a grad school if you are enjoying college and have your BS...it is MUCH easier than doing your Masters 14 years later...LOL

OH...get your pre requisites done early...you will likely change majors before it's over

[EDIT] - PS...if you get a good math advisor and learn to like math & science...we can use some good petro-chem engineers here!!!

What he said, If you don't have a girlfriend now, don't get one down there. That will be a big distraction. I avoided serious girlfriends while in the Navy and going to college.

This stuff is great, keep it coming. I'm headed to Gogebic county and I'll be going to school in Ironwood, MI while living in Hurley, WI. My dad has family in that area.
