Default Kodiak "Duece" Dodge Build

Got home from the M&G and just couldn't help myself. Pulled out the cutting torch, PB Blaster and the impact and went to work. So far these axles appear to be in mighty fine shape for a life lived on Afognak Island. This will be a slow work in progress. My Nieghbor is scoring me a set of rims for free from his work and he said he could get me free original manuals and possibly some rebuild parts. SCORE!
Talk about shafts!

Bearings even look to be in good shape.

Cutting weight. 15min of work.

20 minutes with a wire wheel.

You have a perfectly good Dodge just sitting and your building a single person rig? That makes no sense....

This will be a good thread to watch.. Cant' wait to see that Dodge on the Rockwells, I was checking it out at the M&G... Wish I couple build one. But the wife says I need to be able to carry more then 2 people...

I wasn't going to do much more to the truck after I sold all my 1ton gear and coilovers but this winter killed me without a project. The dodge is more or less theropy for the cold Fairbanks winters. Now that I have almost all the tools in my shop it should be allot easier. Scored a new 220 welder and oxy ace bottels the other day. All I need now is a poop pipe bender and a new large socket set.

I know the feeling. I was happy with my bronco last year. But It's been 2 years since I did a project, with my wife in school full time money was really tight. Last year I said screw it and did the 1 tons... Winters are much easier to handle when you have somthing to do...

Good luck on the project. I'm sure you'll turn out happier then you would with the 1 tons..

I checked out your ton swap at the m&g. Looked good. Did you put a locker in the front? I plan on welding the rear and possible a detroit in the front. Tractor ram for steering. I already have a high capacity PSC pump sitting at the house.

No locker yet. What I planned on doing was a Detroit in the rear and then and ARB or Electric locker in the front. But after driving it on the road, I'm thinking a selectable in the rear as well. I like how much easier it is to drive on the road with the Open/LS in the rear.

Honestly, it may be awhile before I do either locker. I ran Knik all day even the greasy stuff in 2WD and those 38x13 TSLs grab pretty good. Way better then the 38x12.5s did. And I'm still up in the air on what gears. the 4.10s are ok, but I had 4.56s with the half tons.

I thought about a ram. But even with the 38s I can turn the wheel easy with the 38s. I put the HD Ford pump in and it made a world of difference over the stock 1/2 pump. the 1 Ton Swap turned out good, I had Kurt weld the Purches on in the same location as the D44. That way it was a direct swap. Seems to be working so far

Just spoke to Tim Lund and put in an order for the first production Rockwell ARB due Aug 1st. Special first run price is $950! I paid **** near that price for a D60 ARB. First run orders are limited and the price special. PM Tim on the Pirate board under the Rockwell ARB thread.

I think you might have me confused for with some one else. I am doing the unthinkable so I can get that much closer to my ultimate dream of racing in Baja. I need to finish my race truck before the end of the decade.

If I part it out I will keep the cab though, for sentimental reasons and maybe to build when I have a way larger income. TT maybe..

Looking forward to the build Dusty. Whats the plan for the suspension?

For the Suspension I am just building new links that are 5-6" longer with Jonny Joints at the Axle end. The lift will be about 6" Higher. Putting my at 16". I am going to be running 46" Michilins. The bed is coming off and I will be hacking some frame and fabricating a new bed.
Yesterday I got off from TS Construction and my friend and I pulled the center section in the rear axle. I think I need to go have an MRI on my back after that ****. The **** thing weighed a ton. Need to get a chain hoist rigged in the garage on the main beam. Here are pictures. BEEF!

I'm getting a good deal on the tires. 54 are way too expensive. 44 would be as big as I would go with boggers.

eww you ended up with the cv style front instead of the stronger ujoint style

also remeber if you want close to the same width you have to flip the hubs around or you will end up with one axles around 8 inch wider then the other

and to get the better alignment for passenger side drop you can swap knuckles to place the tierod up front so you have more room for your links

i have finaly got around to building my secound set of rocks sence i sold my first set that are now under johnnys cj10a mine are new in crates but i still tore them downt o do hub swap and ujoint style shafts in the front

looks like a nice build man cant wait to see this thing done

I knew these weren't going to have the desirable Ujoints. These are still stronger than what I have for now. When I break them I will upgrade. My truck is allot lighter than what these were under.
On the front end I can just turn the entire axle around and turn the center section 180 degrees to put the tie rod in front and give me drivers side drop.
I did find allot of play in the front yoke before tear down. When I pulled one of the front shafts I found a sliver of metal about 5" long. Most likely a bearing. Would explain allot. I read that the bearings are notorious for going out in the front end.

These fenders get run over everytime Kieth loads up. He is due for a set like your new ones. I think I did you a favor by forcing you to buy those fancy bomb proof fenders.
