Default Nelchina Caribou Hunt

AOC EMAIL ALERT

The State Superior Court and Ahtna Tene Nene’ have agreed to offer 30 Nelchina caribou harvest tickets to all Alaskans.

Hunters have until 12:00pm this next Sunday, August 9, 2009, to apply.

Applicants will be drawn from all Alaskans who successfully apply before the deadline, in the next four days.

Alaskan resident Ken Manning and the AOC/AFWCF have been challenging the Alaska Board of Game’s adoption of regulation that issue game harvest tickets to select communities to distribute out to hunters. When it comes to game allocation the Alaska Supreme Court has been clear and consistent. The Equal Access Clause enshrined in Alaska’s State Constitution under Article VIII. Natural Resources specify common use of public resources.

These 30 “community sharing” hunting permits were provided to all Alaskans by court order to comply with the constitutional requirement for common use of game. Neither Ken Manning nor the AOC/AFWCF believe this court ordered hunt allocation scheme is what was intended by the framers of Article VIII, and are challenging the Superior Court Judge’s decisions.

Applications and information regarding the Nelchina caribou community harvest program are available at the Ahtna Office in Glennallen, on the Ahtna website, http://www.ahtna-inc.com, or by calling the Ahtna hunt hotline (907-822-8136)

Thats all well and good, but, as stated here, you have to be a member of the 'community'. i.e. live, or have lived in the area, or have someone that has lived in the area, 'sign' for you.

I'm sorely disappointed with our government for allowing this garbage.

That is the one for the locals. I believe this is the one that is referenced in the press release.
