Default Just a Cherokee

Budget Cherokee Build

I thought i'd toss a build thread, to more or less track the progress on it:
I bought this Jeep about 2-3 weeks after my son was born, since the back seat of a little Nissan 240SX coupe doesn't like a carseat very well.

1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport bought with 152k on the clock. Big buying point for me, besides needings 4-door for the little man, was the Chryco 8.25 rear instead of the dana 35, and manual windows/locks/mirrors etc.

Day 1: June 28, 2011

Picked up a set of 3" lift XJ coils, dakota rear leaf pack, S-10 blazer rear shocks, and a Cherokee front driveshaft for $300 from the junk yard.(No Pic)

But last and not least a cheap set of wheels/ tires at local junk yard $80: Sept 12, 2011

These little guys show up at my door courtesy of UPS: Oct 22, 2011

Wrangler MTRs 33x12.50r15

Finally lifted: Nov 7, 2011
XJ 3" coils w/ Rubicon Express spaceers, and Dakota 2nd-4th leafs under XJ Main leaf w/ 1" JKS Shackles. Rough Country track bar, and front lower control arms. Homebrew hack n' tap using a yoke, P/N: 3103-27CV, from Driveline of Fresno, and a Cherokee front driveshaft.

New Meats: Nov 24, 2011

Being a Cherokee with small wheel wells and not looking to lift it past 4" trimming had to be done: Nov 26, 2011

Clearence check in the driveway

They don't like the sand unless they are aired down, but they like to dig. Other than that i really can't complain, they clean out easily on the trail, real good wear on the street, i have about 10k on these now and the little "hairs" are still on the tires. Trail wise they did real well in Gulches (South Carolina), and the trails in New York. Aswell as the sandy trails, clay, mud in the Pan Handle of Florida. I have yet to have them in the snow though. I can only hope they do well up there on the snow and trails.

figure i'd add a little photo update on the Cherokee since I'm not around to do it. The Mrs. took the picture and tagged me in Facebook with the caption of "Dada's jeep!! He loves daddy's jeep ever since we have been driving it he gets super excited to go bye-bye"

The little things she does is making this loooong year in Korea go a little "quicker"

Are you at Tyndal or Eglin? I lived in Destin, FWB and Pensacola before coming to Alaska in '75. My son still lives in Destin drives a yellow CJ8.

I'm currently in Korea, but was stationed at Tyndall. If I had know better I would have probably tried to get to Eglin over Tyndall.

I have some fun stuff in store over the next couple weeks. Mom gave me the green light to start getting some parts ordered for my "little" Cherokee. Once our state tax check comes in, 2-3 weeks, parts will start to flow.

I have 55-ish days left will i head home for my mid-tour. I am expecting the XJ to take some noticeable changes while i'm home.

Anyone care to guess what is in store for it?

I started piecing the 3-link stuff before i left for Korea. So if all goes well, my mid-tour will lead to a 3-link front, 35s, and, if funds permit, a 60/60 or 60/14-bolt to start my track to 1-tons and 37s.

So we've decided to bring it AK and just wheel the hell out if it. It'll be late winter/spring, mid-summer at the latest before i even get the 1-tons under it. But a nice 3" front stretch and 2" rear stretch on tons and 37s sounds like a real fun toy.

Spent a little time drafting up an idea for my rear bumper. Looking to get some opinions from those that want to give one.

I plan to make it out of 2"x6"x3/16 wall rectangle with an integrated 2" receiver. I will also be welding recovery tabs through the bumper at both ends near the actual "frame" mounts.

any ideas from you guys?

Re-geared and cleaned out the front axle. So nice to have the 4-wheel drive back.

Is it still the d30? I geared my 60 front yesterday for my Cherokee build. That's not a fun job

I have 8.8 install kits like that, real nice for centering the wheel in the wheel well!
