Default Jim Creek Master Plan Meetings

I am sending out this notice on behalf of the Mat-Su Borough and the Jim Creek Master Plan(JCMP). As many of you know the JCMP is complete and the Mat-Su Borough Assembly approved $250,000.00 to be used towards the project.

I’ve already met with several different groups and individuals presenting the plan this Spring and explaining how the plan was developed and funded. Now is the time for you, as a Jim Creek user, to prioritize the plan.

I am asking for a group of approximately 7 – 9 stakeholders to commit to attending 1-2 meetings a month for a period of 3-6 months for no more than 60-90 minutes per meeting. The meetings will be in the evening and most likely held in Palmer at the DSJ Building(350 East Dahlia), but could be moved around the Valley if needed.

I would like to have representation from the ATV community, the 4x4/OHV community, the West Butte Community Council, The Mat-Su Trails Council, The Alaska Outdoor Access Alliance, and two at-large members of the public. If there are other groups or individuals that you know of that may be beneficial we can add them as well.

It is very important that this process get started and we begin implementation. I know it’s the summer and no one wants to be indoors, but it is equally important that we have people commit to the entire process

The first meeting will be held on Thursday, June 26 at 6:30pm in the third floor conference room of the DSJ Building. The easiest way to access the building is on the East side (facing the ball fields) and come up the stairs.
At this first meeting we will set up a calendar, go over the existing plan and begin discussions on “what” you would like to see built out at Jim Creek first!

Please RSVP me at Hugh.Leslie@matsugov.us.

Thanks!
Hugh Leslie

I will be in bethel till the 2nd. Sorry i wount be able to attend. Put my vote in for anything being built except roads or buildings. I really like it the way it is. Just need to keep the rift raft out. A bigger dump site at the parking lot would be a good start. I seen it overclowing a few times and had to pick it up after it blew all around but had no place to put i. Just some food for thought.

I can attend that first meeting. I concur with the previous poster about leaving it the way it is. Most users appreciate the experience the way it is. Most "improvements" really detract from the reasons most people like to go there in the first place.

He is asking for a long term 3-6 month commitment for every meeting.

Contact Kenny Barber. He is a older retired guy. He attended the M&G and he is on the mat-su trails comity board. He also lives real close to jim creek trail head. This kind of stuff is right up his alley. I could probably find his number if he is what your looking for.

I was part of the team that developed the master plan and I support making improvements. I wonder if folks that have expressed opposition have read the master plan?

It only affects the MSB land, about 500 acres that contains the parking lot. With the exception of the Sexton Trail I'd bet most OHV folks don't use the trails on this parcel.

For improvements there are things like RV parking & camping areas (camping in the gravel lot sucks). There are other features like a kids ATV area, possibly an obstacle course and mud pit. Tying the old logging trails together so there aren't a bunch of deadend trails. Plus other things. It is a long term plan, like 10-20 years.

We are very fortunate that we have a supportive assembly that has given double the funding that Hugh and his team requested. We must "strike while the iron is hot".
