Default Mat-Su Boro Trail Bonds

Are you a resident of the Mat-Su Boro? This fall we will get to vote on a bond package that includes funding for trails. The last trails bond package we voted on was in 2000 and it was used to kick start our winter snowmobile trails development. It was a great success. Some of the trails in this years bond package are Eska Falls trail and Sun Valley trails. In total there are eight or nine trails targeted for funding. A representative from the Mat-Su Boro will be at our September 12th meeting to tell us about the bond proposal, the trails, the funding and the scope of the projects. All are welcome to come hear and ask questions about this proposal.

The presentation by Hugh Leslie (MSB) was an eye opener. As a borough employee he cannot express any opinion on the issue, the bond will be multi faceted project that includes the following:
bringing the Palmer and Wasilla swimming pools up to date and compliance for registered swim meets. Annual pool use is 144,000 users. The Brett Memorial ice rink is included for upgrades and changes to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs, annual use is 57,000 users. These facilities are 34 years old and are past their useful lives, not efficient to operate, and expensive to maintain. The bond will also include 9 trails for improvement and/or maintenance.

A. Palmer Pool Improvements $7,098,200
B. Wasilla Pool Improvements $5,732,700
C. Brett Memorial Ice Arena $3,744,000
D. Ridge Trail Multi use $313,000
E. Wasilla Creek Headwaters Trail Multi-use $500,000
F. Menard Sports Complex Trail system Pedestrian $150,000
G. Plumley Maud Multi use $250,000
H. Matanuska Riverfront Trail North Pedestrian $150,000
I. Matanuska Riverfront Trail South Pedestrian $100,000
J. Brasil Springs to Crevasse Moraine Pedestrian $150,000
K.Haessler-Norris Trail system reroutes Multi-use $265,000
L. Herning Trail Winter Multi-use $250,000
M. Talkeetna Outdoor Ice Rink $765,000
N. Willow Outdoor Ice Rink $765,000
O. Willow Community Park $325,000
P. Big Lake Area Snow MachineTrail Bridges $1,250.000
Q. Fish Lake Parking (Talkeetna) $100,000
R. Trapper Creek Parks and Community Center Improvements $75,000
S. Meadow Lakes Sports Complex Improvements $175,00

2016 Bond Total $22,160,000

The cost for a homeowner with a house valued at $218,000 would be $3.83/mo or ~$46/ yr, IIRC. This bond issue if passed would be a staggered start and implemented over a period of 10 years.
Additional info will be available when the actual bond language is published.
We will keep you posted.

All are welcome, it came from my notes and documents from the MSTC meeting on the 12th. Educate yourselves before voting on this issue. We welcome visitors.

One at Palmer HS, one a Wasilla HS. While $7M+ is a lot of money, considering the predicted service life has been exceeded, the equipment is obsolete, hard to find repair parts for, if at all, and not energy efficient, and the pools themselves are in disrepair, and do not meet specifications for registered swim competitions. AND 144,000 users a year all adds up to a lot of money. I should have included this info in my original post, but I thought it was pretty obvious, and I was tired of typing.
If anyone has any questions I will try to answer them.
