Default PTO winch conversion

This is a continuation of a discussion brought up in the 8274 build thread.

The last two or three posts in that thread gave me a idea, why not make an adapter to mount one or two motors in line on a PTO winch? The adapter could be easily fabbed in a 6" swing lathe using flat plate and pipe.

Anyone interested? Thoughts? Got a PTO winch that could be used as a mock up?

I traded my old thor 12k to gus. It was an electric worm drive, he may let it be used as a test mule. It had what looked like an old prestolite starter motor on it. So I dont see why an electric motor, ie giggle pin type, wouldnt work on a big pto unit.

Yup, I saw the Thor the last time I was at Gus's. I hadn't had this idea at that time. One of my neighbors has a Thor or Tensen TX10?

There was a tcase type PTO and winch on CL earlier today $50. Looked like OEM for a CJ. If anyone is interested.

I also wouldn't mind trying something with the Thor as well, it's going on my 1-ton

For future use: I tried using a winch motor to turn the 45k garret I had at one time and it didnt work. Any good "load" would stall it. The electric motor would have to be at least 5+ hp on something heavy. Gus, the thor is essentially what shacks talkin about, but on a much smaller scale.

Does anyone know if a Bowmotor 3 (9 HP) is interchangeable with a Warn 8274 motor without an adapter? If we build an adapter for an 8274 motor (for test purposes) and it shows promise, someone might upgrade to a Bowmotor 3 for a heavier rig. An alternative might be the two inline motors advertised on eBay, made in Lithuania, about $400.

I have a drawing completed for the adapter, one end will be attached to the motor the other will be attached to he winch, once the winch has been identified. It has a provision for a sealed bearing to support the shaft end. The drive gear (splined) will be welded to a u joint that will attach to the input shaft of the winch. Pretty simple stuff so far. I have a spare 8274 motor we can use for proof of concept. It is a keyed shaft/drive gear, but it should work for testing. There may be a u joint that will fit the motor shaft and the winch input, that would certainly simplify things, more research required.

A Bowmotor should be more than enough considering the standard winch motor is barely 1hp iirc. Wonder if eddie or jason have a spare we could use for this experiment?

I'll talk to Ed when he gets back. He told me about an experimental motor he may have access to at M&G.
