Default Belt Grinder

Well, its done enough to grind some stuff. Belt size is 2"x72". Motor is a 3 phase 1.5hp (THANKS SHACK!!) driven by a cheapo ebay VFD. Idler and drive wheel and jackshaft parts were ordered from Beaumont Metalworks. (good people!!)

The flat platen wheels I made myself, and pressed high speed bearings in after turning down a little on the lathe. The lower wheel was poured from molten aluminum from a smashed up TH350 (THANKS BIGSUB!!), and cleaned up on the lathe as well.

I still need to build an adjustable steady rest, and maybe work up a 6 and 8" wheel for convex grinds.

Jed,
Glad the motor worked for you, if you ever need more power for the grinder or another project, I have a similar 3 HP, same price. How do you like the VFD?

The drive took a little bit of getting used to. I'm glad the destructions were in english. The motor ohmed good, so I replaced the bearings and gave it some fresh paint.

Next step is to fab up a dust collector, and maybe enclose the VFD.

I've been kicking around ideas for a small 4'x4'x4' booth to paint, cast bullets, and tumble brass in. I was considering a range hood for the top and exhausting it outside under our deck. I also have a sand blasting cabinet I want to make a dust collector for, I was thinking of a Craigs list shop vac (cheap) plumbed into a barrel or other container with a filter on the vacuum supply side, and this container would be connected to the cabinet with a hose.

I have an old trusty shopvac I call pirate. One of he wheels was missing, and I ziptied a piece of oak dowel in place of the wheel. Maybe I'll duct tape a funnel to the hose, and place that under the platen.
