Here is my 5x5.5 spindle. I put the cut up piece on the arm and then mounted the rim

Then I flipped it and tack welded the piece back on

Here is one of norms rims. I am delivering the 3 remaining rims to him Tuesday.

I told my mom that because she held the smoke and spark pipe that everyone here would think she is cool for working on the rims. Who is with me?

Weights:
122lbs: American Farmer 18.4x16.1
28lbs: Front rim half (larger one)
12.5lbs: 5/16 Plate center for 5x5.5 and 6x5.5
18.5lbs: Rear rim half (smaller one)
4.5lbs: 20 2" grade 8 bolts, 20 grade 8 flat washers, 20 grade 8 nylock nuts
12lbs: Innertube

202lbs measured assembled...The lighter items may not have registered as accurate on the Helth-o-meter.

So, 808lbs in rims and tires...

Now for some pictures!

Here I am with my fancy paint jig. I've hung 400lbs of rims on a fiberglass ladder.

When I tested the tubes I found 3 sad ones:

And one happy one:

I had to buy 3 more:

Well, as you can see from my new signature...Bobby is unsure about these tires! On the phone it was all great. But then the powers of the tractor tires overwhelmed his computer screen.

I am unsure if it is saracasm or if he really doesn't think it would work!

He's saying "I really don't want to warranty those forever"

Given our environment, and that you are not Dan Dibble, I think they'll be fine. I would NOT expect them to live under a Gus Buggy or Ty Buggy - only under a LIGHT buggy or a Zuk. Maybe a Toyota pickup with a tired 22r.

What part are you concerned about? The graphs show the longfields being "stronger" than a stock 35 spline chevy 60.

The knuckle wouldn't take anything, or the ring/pinion...but those don't have anything to do with the shafts. Plus the only thing under waranty is the CV joint.

I just called him. He isn't worried about the shafts, mostly EVERYTHING else...

ya, being light, you'll be easy on the kingpins. Being 4:11 gears, you'll have strong diffs. The "NEW" Longs are even stronger - first thing to go will be the Aisen hubs - not so bad, unless they take out your Longfield splines. Then it's bad.

I need a set of those b a d

Run flanges and have Bobby cryo the 4.10's.

The housing will be the weak link.

Very cool. Been following this for a while and I can't wait to start making things myself. I just bought a CNC plasma/router table (5'x10') and I think I got the programing figured out. I was thinking of making my own dbl beadlocks and others use HDPE pipe for the spacer but it's 700.00 a stick. I was thinking I could make the spacers out of steel just two outer rings to press against the beads seperated by steel bars it would be easy to make. I will try to post an image. GREAT ingenuity! I don't think you mentioned what thickness you made the new rim shell out of or the rings that bolt togeather.

Grant, thanks for all your help on those rims. I'm not running tubes and after 24 hours only one tires has gone down. I've found that getting the two rim surfaces to within 1/16 tolerance and bolting the two halves together with a 1/4 bead of silicone and letting them set for four hours is the way to go. I had to de-mount one tire to fix some blown out sealant and it wasn't a problem at all, easily doable in the field. A rubber gasket or o-ring would still be the best solution however. I may contact Huchinson about getting a few of their o-rings like in those rims but I'm alittle cheap so I might just make some out of a inner tube I have laying in the shop. Thrifty is nifty right?

These rims are super bad and I love being able to field strip them. Mine still have a few leaks due to some carbon pockets in my weld so two go flat every two weeks. Still working on that.

ok starting to thinking of building a set kind of like these. only the bolt together ring will be seprate from the centers. rims are 16.5 x14 3 3/4 back spacing. the rings will need to be made 13 1/2 od 11 1/2 id thinking 3/8th or 1/4 thick. with 16 bolts holding them together spaced at just shy 2 1/2in or i could do 29 bolts spaced at 1.35 in . rings would be welded in about 3 to 4in from the mounting flange so it would be close to the center of rim. any one see any problem with any of this.

You need to draw a picture. Whatever you do, don't use 29 bolts.
