If it was wrapped at an angle back and forth, it was probably Rothco. They have started using 550 cord made in the USA. I haven't used it myself yet or had an bad comments from any of my customers. So it can't be all that bad of stuff? At .07 cents a foot, can't be bad money spent. IMO

HaHaHa! Good one! The list is shorter than what I don't use it for. Replaced my boot laces with it, tied back some branches, got a chunk of steak out of my teeth, put some on the zippers of one of my packs, hung some up as a place to hang some hangers, and all that just today.

Please tell me this is not a serious question!!! It's 550 cord like Giles said I can come up with a shorter list for what you can't use it for......

Oh and just as an FYI..... "S. L. Wood Braiding Company" is the company that the Army purchases through GSA for 550 cord spools now. Just checked the stuff I've got in my platoon cage. AND yes still made in the good ol' USA!

What is the best knot to use in this stuff?

I have a couple miles worth of real .mil cord and it seems like it stretches out a ton or the knots slip. The stuff I have is white, MIL-C-5040H Type III, NSN 4020-00-240-2146

On spool like this: http://www.armyproperty.com/nsn/4020-00-240-2146

I've tried every knot I know, I was in the Scouts so there's quite a few.

One, 550 cord is designed to stretch and give a bit, think about the "chute shock" when exiting a C-17 at over 100knots the cords have to give somewhat to compensate for load. If not i'd be a lawn dart smushed into the dropzone by thsi point!

I have a couple spools of the white stuff too here at work obviously along with spools of ther OD green stuff too.... As for Knots bowlines work well at least for tie down purposes for us....... Normal square not works great with a lock hitch if you gut the cord first and then burn the ends.

Forgot about my own thread! I just wanted to know if the stuff i was seeing was legitimate. I bought a spool of 1000 from sportsmens and then bought another 1000 from chimos cause it seemed to be a much higher quality ($90). I guess with no brand names, its hard to tell.

'Real' 550 cord has color coded manufacturer identifier threads. There will be one strand in the guts with a color. This is so when **** breaks that isn't supposed to break on parachutes, us parachute riggers can point the finger at that manufacturer and say "You suck". I don't have a list of manufacturers, might be able to google it.

Nylon on nylon slips, when we tie **** together for aerial delivery... every knot has 3 locking hitches in the free running end.
