Default Shotgun for Mom - Bear defense

My Mother spends a lot of time alone in bear country. She has a Smith and Wesson N frame 44 mag, but would like a shotgun too.

She thinks she wants an 870 Police model, but I'd like her to consider stepping up to a Benelli M4 for reduced recoil and so she can't short stroke it under stress.

Thoughts, experience, suggestions?

Also, and IMO just as important, can you recommend a high quality sling system?

might be a bit over the top but i like this. http://www.gunsamerica.com/953655101...12_Saiga_1.htm
also remington has a few very nice 12 guage shotguns in the semi auto. also look at the 45/70 guide gun. they are around 7 lbs 6 rounds lever gun. good luck, mark

No detachable magazines, lol.

No lever guns.

Gotta be a shotgun

An old Browning A5 is about the most reliable semi auto shotgun I am aware of, some newer types like a Saiga may be as reliable, but don't fall within your parameters (no detachable magazines) An A5 can hang out the window of a Cub and function reliably in winter conditions. A5's are a little pricey unless you buy a beater, Remington made a licensed copy also, a little less expensive.

A pump gun MAY not be the best choice for a person in a emergency situation.

Whats a mom worth?

She wants the 870. I told her to step up to the semi-auto. 1800 bucks is a hard pill to swallow though there is a used one in FBX for around 1200. (Still more than double the 870)

A semi-auto 338 Winmag might be cool.

I'm a big fan of the Benelli M4 but I have never been able to justify spending that much money when I can get an 870 for $300. I've only fired the Benelli M4 twice but it was a really nice weapon in my opinion. If money wasn't a concern then that would be my choice for sure.

hard to beat an 870(or 500 if you're a mossberg fan). if you want to go the semi-auto route go with the remmington 1187. a mix between the old 1100 and the 870. "most" after market parts for the 870 fit the 1187 as well. we used them almost exclusively hunting duck, pheasant, and turkey.

oddly enough 2 of my 870's and my first big boy shotgun 1187 is what my mom keeps around the house for home defense. i outfitted them each with adjustable stocks since my mom is a bit on the short side and had trouble shouldering them with the stock...stock.

Stick with the 870...it will run when the Benelli won`t. I`ve had my share of problems with the autos and carry a custom 870 when my life matters. Most cannot get in good follow-up shots with an auto barking 600 grain rounds so why run it??? Is there any reason why she would want to go with the police mag vs. an express? The mag is more robust but if it will only see 20 rounds a year there isn`t any benefit. i`m not one to spend more coin if there isn`t significant benefit. If you guys make to Anch look me up and we can take mine to the range with a couple different stocks.

I have a Knoxx tactical stock available to you if/when you get the 870...it will suck up some of the recoil for her. $80

Call Steve at AK Tactical for the sling...can`t think of the name of mine but it allows 6 carry positions with a release on one strap soyou can come up to a firing position quick from 4 carry positions...it`s been years since I purchased it though.

Side note...how are you doing with that Win 94 I sent down a couple years ago???

Mossberg is the one to have IMHO. Mine run flawlessly and I am STUPID hard on all my weapons.

Have you considered a 20 guage for her? Probably not the ideal "bear" gun but she will surely shoot it more and it is way better to put a good shot into that bear than to put a big wound in one. Just a thought.

If it is a 12 guage, non detachable magazine, Auto ONLY option. Mossberg 930 spx

And because threads without pictures suck.

makes a nice centerpiece does it not?

Good info on the sling, thank you.

I worked on the 94 a little bit when I first got it, but its miss feeding. I haven't figured out exactly what the problem is yet. First order of business is a rubber butt pad though! Good gawd!

Has anyone shot the Beretta TX4 Storm? Sportsmans is listing them for $1400 and has them on sale for $700.

Go with an 870 like a few others said. I've got the 870 "Tactical" model with an 18.5" barrel, extended mag, knoxx stock, and XS Ghost ring sights and rail. This is the gun I carry when I go into the woods with my family. Don't have a large caliber handgun, and besides, when I hold a Brenneke Black Magic Magnum next to a .44 round, theres just no compariso. I'd go pump over semi just because I've heard some guns don't feed the heavy slugs as well and as reliably as they could, same with light target loads.....every gun prefers certain ammo.

Remington 11-87 20 ga compact. Last time I was in the Soldotna SW they had one. Blue Force Gear Victory sling and V-Tac butt stock adaptor. Brenekke magnum 20 ga slugs.

That`s cause you`re sick in the head...Mossterds....dang man...so brilliant at times and then Mossbergs. Granted their new products are better than before but at the rate they`re going they`ll be behind the curve way past our pushing daisies time. Shakin head.....
BTW, I`ve had several but enjoy the finer/smoother things in life. Short a little binding and rough metal work they all managed to send rounds.

Brook,

If your Momma is comfortable with something buy it for her...she will enjoy what her mind perceives is the best. Of course taking into consideration what is basic and reliable (not autos).

Disclaimer for the Berreta/Benneli folks...they are fine weapons but for someone who knows nothing about their operation they are best left with the basic proven platforms.

1st pic is my accurate one...second pic is a Wilson/Vang build.

I like that idea... a relatively cheap semi auto 20 gauage. Hmmm for future reference I might have to keep this idea open for myself. I would like to have a semi auto shotty and have shot them but never owned one. This could have some potential.

A little off-topic, but I picked up that book the other day at Value Village, only a few stories in, but I'm liking it. I'd go 12 over 20 any day, sure, there's less recoil, but they make proven bear rounds in 12 gauge for a reason.

For home defense, you bet I'd consider a 20. For bear defense, not unless it was my only option.

Are you guys saying to go with a 20 serious?
