Unhappy HELP--2000 800 RMK Troubles UPDATED 7:30 PM 28 Jan

Took it out and got less than 2 miles total today. Started to kinda hesitate but the would kick in. Kept getting worse and worse until finally it was continously sluggish and would never ick in or 'open up'. Just as I got it back to the house the temp light came on? Coolant is OK.
WTF? Is oils and gas not mixing maybe. I dunno....
Thanks guys

If it matters, I just bought the sled this summer and it has 1200-1300 miles tuned and aftermarket pipe.. I've rode further than this earlier this season, so its a new problem.

Possible I guess. I just put in 1/4 to 1/2 a RED bottle of the HEET before I took it out this morning. I also recently filled it up. Why would water in the fuel make it over heat?
I just went out and started it and the temp light was still on... No way is still hot in these temps...

not sure about the temp but I'd check over the fuel system, I'm sure its got a clog or water somewhere.

to make sure your coolent system is circulating fire it up and let it run untell its warm, then feel the coolent hoses and heat exchangers for heat.

also I would check the plugs, just to make sure it wasnt running lean.

I'd look at the coolant temp sensor and see if the wire has come off. I have had that happen before. 2nd change you plugs and see if it is still slugish..

Did that as soon as I stopped. Hoses were warm, but definately not HOT.

Going out to pull and look at the plugs now and trace coolant temp wire. Will post findings shortly

1 Wire going to sending unit was broke. All I gotta do is buy a new sending unit and that problem is fixed. (wire broke off right at sending unit, so I don't think I can splice or repair it)

Replaced both plugs with new ones and she still ran bad. Old plugs looked normal. Once around the yard yielded a backfire or two and she sounded more like a deep throated tractor than a snowmachine.

Awaiting more ideas and advice. Thanks guys I appreciate it!

In Edit: What are the odds of having 2 things go wrong at the same time that have nothing to do with one another.

The Polaris 800 twins had a crank bearing issue, PTO side if I remember correct. Polaris has a bearing update for this. A bearing going bad could deffinately drag the motor down and give you a serious bog. Does the motor feel harder to pull over than normal? What's your plug color? If you just bought the sled, there's a good chance it's jetted lean. You could have a scored cylinder if it's running lean.

First thing is first, look in the cylinders and see what the walls and pistons look like. If its burned up you've got bigger problems to deal w/. Do this by taking off your exaust and shining a flash light in your exaust ports and looking in through your spark plug holes. Anything other than pefectly smooth cylinder walls means you've got a problem, look for any kind of scratches or vertical scratches. Look at the top of your pistons and make sure there's no impressions or "dings". Also while your at it tell us what color the tops of your pistons are. If that looks good, check your plug color and post on here. Should be chocolate co-co brown or card-board brown. If everything looks good, I'd pull the carbs and give them a good cleaning. If your plug color shows up rich, you might have a stuck float. Dirty carbs will deff make your sled run like crap. Checking these basics will give you a pretty good idea of what's going on in your motor.

i had kind of the same problem one time with a sled i tore everything off and it ended up being a jamned up spring in the carb after i fixed that it ran like a top but id check your chain case and anything thats got bearings in it also make sure it all moves smoothly and what not

Check your motor first. If the top end or crank is toast, bearings are the least of your worries. Also, a chasis bearing or chaincase issue wouldn't explain the bog and backfire. If you had a siezed bearing or something in the drivetrain, you'd start burning a belt not having backfire and engine bog

You could also call your local Polaris dealer and ask them, A quick call to thier service dept might yeild a fix..or at least send you in the right direction. I have done this before and had luck!!!

Obviously I'm am gonnat try this first, fact I'l try and pick one of them up tomorrow cause it needs to be fixed anyway.
I doubt that's it for 2 reasons:
1. Too simple and easy and my luck is never that good.
2. The motor does sound retarded right now...lol

The rest of your options I will heed and most likely just take to the shop. I ain't that much of a mechanic.... Will suck to be me eh.....

I'm almost sure it's your temp sensor. I'd even bet a dollar. Had it happen.

You could test your problem by sticking a common pin into where the wire broke off the sensor, cut the head off the pin, and re-connect the wire, thereby completing the circuit. (Temporary fix for testing only). If she starts running good, that verifies the problem. Note: bypassing the sensor doesn't work, the circuit has to see some resistance. This also just happened last weekend to my nephew's 800. I would look at the routing of the wires. Make sure they aren't kinked, and have just a little slack.

New Temp sending unit fixed it! Put it in and she ran like a raped ape. Thanks to all for your input. You all saved me at least a hundred dollar bill from a repair shop!
Thanks again

Good to hear it. Glad it wasn't something more serious.

You still may want to look into wether your 8 has the crank bearing update. It can make a problem down the road.
