Default Current riding conditions 08/09 *now with pictures!*

Been on a ride? Tell us about the snow conditions.

I just got off the phone with my old man, he spent the afternoon at Lost Lake and reports the snow was good for a pre-Christmas ride, but still not a real deep. Most of the snow was pretty hard, lots of traction to be had.

I'm headed up Primrose in the morning, I'll report back when I get home.

A little late, but...

Primrose trail was really rough, and had very little snow. The little swamps on the way up were un-ridable, but there is plenty of snow up top to rode where ever you want. We had very limited visibility, so we stayed in the trees and had a blast. There are a few alders sticking out, but for the most part the riding is really quite good. The snow was set up, but still soft enough to create some challenge on the steeper, more technical climbs. Perfect for an early season ride!

I know we aren't the only two people on the board riding.

Molly and I went to the Caribou Hills today for a quick ride to put some break in miles on her new sled. We decided to go in via Homer for something new. It was a long drive but you basically get off the trailer, drive a couple hundred yards, and your in good riding terrain. No crazy mountains to climb but good boondocking terrain.

There still isnt enough snow to get through the bigger alder patches but there is plenty to pick your way around. The swamps are VERY rideable and if you find small ones they are plumb full of nice powder.

It was a beautiful day, 5-10* and sunny, light winds. If it wasnt Mollys first ride of the season we probably would have put on 60+ miles instead of 30.

Next big snow it will be great riding.

-27 at the Deshka Landing yesterday, much colder on the river. Plenty of snow, just not much room for error at that temp.

Rode Talketna Saturday was 15 degrees at 10am, swamps had 3-4ft of what WAS untouched powder, once we got out to the mountains the snow had a nice 4-5" crust on the top. Had a small slide break on us, nothing major though.

Sunday we rode a private lake near big lake that had about two feet of untouched powder. Was -16 when we left. Definately had a good time breaking in the new sled though.

Pvill wasnt to bad, going threw willow we hit -37. Once at the Kroto parking lot temps were right around 0. The forks said -18 but it didnt seem that cold. We did find some untouched snow and the riding is good if you know where to go and can handle the sub zero temps.

Was going to take the machines out yesterday, but come to find out they where 500 LBS metal bricks.. all 4 could not be turned over by hand and the tracks where frozen solid...

Ended up spending a couple hours trying to get them into the garage to thaw out. Hopfully they will start up once thawd.

Those thigns are a pain to move when the tracks don't spin..!!

Willow has about a foot of untouched back int he swamps. Was too f'n cold to keep the goggles from freezing, though.

Rode Johnson Pass today. Snow was HARD! Harder than I have ever ridden on. Overheated at least 10 times on the up and back. Snow up top was very light. Rocks everywhere, alders still 10-15 feet out of the snow in places. Moss and scrub brush sticking out on the knobs between the lakes. It was so hard you could jump high and come down hard and still not break through the crust in most places. Trail wasnt too bumpy, but there were a few really icy spots. River crossings were too shallow to water skip, but but deep enough to slip your belt if you idled through.

Well, looks like Johnson pass is out. Eureka was fun, about two feet at the lodge, and more the further back we went. We went back about 25 miles and put on over 100 miles yesterday. The snow was 3-4 deep in spots. Alot of pics on www.snowest.com under the alaska section.

Rode Lost Lake today. Primrose was really icy for quite a ways. Snow was terrible up to the 3000' mark. Found a couple nice bowls to play in that were as good as I've seen this year. Had an absolute blast. Best ride of the year by a LONG ways. It took us an hour to go the first couple miles of the trail though. I cracked my tub on a stump, and we ended up and hand lining two of the four sleds up a couple of the icy sections. It was absolutely brutal. Definatley not recomended for the weak of heart or the novice rider. We need more snow!!!

Rode near mile 170 yesterday. About 6" of fresh, snow was a highway underneath you could climb anything. Yesterday was the highest any of us have ever taken our sleds. We found a sick valley way up high to play in just for a little bit before it got socked in and we headed for the lowland. Terrible flat light up high. All in all probably one of the best rides all year, cant wait for some fresh.

Mildew when are you getting that POS Rev out?
