Hello and hat tip to the AK 4x4 Network and its members. I am new to the forum, fairly new to wheeling in any dedicated sense, not at all new to Alaska, and looking for for a motor for my Cherokee.

It is a 95 Cherokee Sport w/ the 4.0 h.o., and a standard trans. Engine has a substantial low end knock.

I found a motor at Northwest, but it has 180k miles, and thats not the route I want to go. I am aware I can buy a reman from out of state, but I would like to source one locally if possible. Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you very much!

Welcome to the madness! I would recommend posting up a wanted add for your engine. There will be a good chance someone on here can hook you up.
Its just a matter of them seeing your wanted post.

Hello everyone...My name is Patrick and I am a noob to the wonderful world of Jeeps. I recently purchased an 04 Rubicon and am itching to take it out. A little bit about myself, I'm 27, a SSgt in the USAF and stationed at JBER. I live in Eagle River and have been known to smoke fine cigars. I'm really looking forward to going out and riding/learning the ropes with you all and cannot wait to get to know everyone. If you ever see me around town feel free to wave or stop me and say hello. I know there are quite a few jeeps around base and I am just another one of em. Cheers!

Yes they are... but there are pages and pages of tech info..

Anyhow it's an '87 K5 with a new 350tbi, freshly rebuilt 700r4, np208, 10 bolts, 6" spring lift (no blocks) and 35's. I got it off Craigslist and have been slowly working on it. I had Young's gear build me a longer CV type driveshaft and plan on upgrading my axles this summer. Hoping for a 14bff and Dana 60 if I can find one. Thinking 4:56 and a rear locker. I just mounted/painted the front bumper, and plan on building a back one with D rings. Also cut the cat off and added a new flowmaster. After I get new axles, thinkin maybe 38's. It's also my daily driver.

Hey, my name's Karl, I bought an '86 toyota off craigs that has a misfire on a cylinder (gonna check compression tonight to find cylinder) and a broken right rear shock mount (got a welder for that). I've been wanting to get a rig for wheeling and hunting for a while now and I decided to just jump into it. You'll see me driving it around town later in the year and hopefully I'll see you guys on the trails too!

A pic

Hello! We're excited to get back into four-wheeling after a long break! In the past, I've owned an '84 Scrambler, '97 TJ and few full-size Chevrolets. Life happened...haven't had the time or money. We needed a 'back-up' rig in a fast hurry a few weeks ago and it was just coincidence that the best deal I could get on short notice was an '86 Cherokee with 107K on it. Immaculate interior, no dents, no rust, 5-speed. Wasn't intended to be a 'toy' but between Anchorage and our home in Palmer I quickly fell in love with it. So...plans are in motion. I already know that the best thing is to take out the 2.8 and replace it with a 3.4 so my eyes are open. I wasn't aware that I had to pay attention if it was in a FWD, 2WD or 4WD but according to a friend of mine it makes a difference (?).
Plan on a 3" lift and 33" tires (yes, I prefer to go subtle). Already took it out a few times but still looking for good places to play. My old hole up off Hiland Rd. is blocked off so....have to find some new places. Went up the B52 trail today and a run to Jim Creek. I prefer mud over rocks so....got my eyes open.
Look forward to meeting you and we'll keep our eyes open for any events!

LOL...yes, indeed that was I! First time trying out the old $1000 Cherokee to see what worked and what didn't. And the whole way in....I kept saying "Oh God I need a lift!"

Hello! New to the board, I moved up here last winter in the Air Force. I've got a Mercedes G-wagen (Gelandewagen) that I bought before I got here. I've had quite a few things to do in order to get it ready, but I think it is ready enough to take out. I hope to do suspension/wheel/tire to it next year, but for now it's got 31's and lockers on both axles. I hope I can get 1 or 2 runs in this year before we all get snowed in. Everybody at work sold their trucks so I've been looking for someone to go out with.

To member KOneemen, you just bought that truck off a guy in my squadron at work.

Anyway, new to all this, but looking forward to getting dirty. Welcome me!

Thanks...pretty low mileage for an '86 at only 107K. As far as the 4.0...love that engine but since this is the last year for the Chevy powerplant it will be easier to shove in a 3.4 (direct bolt in, no adapters etc).
I'm going to have to farm out some of the work on it. Any suggestions (valley or Anchorage) on where to go for GOOD work on getting the lift done? I just don't have the time or resources to do it myself right now.
