Default Winch grease

The smitty built xrc winch on my yota has always been stiff and close to impossible to free spool. I opened it up and found plenty of grease it's as thick as cosmoline. What grease do folks use when servicing winches?

I have a 5 gallon bucket white grease, can't remember the real name, I'll look the next time I go out to the conex. This grease has good film strength, yet remains about the consistency of mayonnaise in any temp I have encountered. LMK if you want to try some.

I'd guess that's a lithium grease. I'll probably just use the grease I use on the equipment. It has decent water washing resistance. I also put a zerk fitting in the gear housing so I can keep it full even when using a lighter lube.

Amsoil makes a artic grade grease I think would work really good. I bough a tube to redo my xrc8 but haven't yet. I have replaced the factory grease with Lucas but that didn't make a big difference.

I'd imagine an arctic rated grease would work fine provided the winch housing is sealed well enough so it doesn't run out when it gets warm.

Yeah about seals. There isn't really an inner seal. It's more like a dirt/dust boot. It won't hold liquids in or out. I guess that's part of the reason for the super thick grease from the factory.

I've degreased all the planetaries and they spin good on their own. I'll put it together dry to check it out before the final assembly.

Thanx Shack. I just finished reassembly using the grease I have on hand. The gear case isn't plumb full but it free spools much better. Hopefully it'll stay that way after I fill it from the zerk fitting. I kinda look at the zerk addition as something like a bearing buddy. After a soaking I can just squirt more in to displace any bad mojo.

I got in the habit of putting grease zerks between bearings in wheel barrow wheels, carts, lawn mowers, including blade spindles. I can't prove it helps but, it gives me some peace of mind, my thinking is that bearings last longer with grease than without.

Ok, I'll go there. Stop buying inferior winches! The red "W" means what it means.

Let me know if if you need a decent winch (Warn). You'd be surprised what can be had right here on this board for a killer deal.

ok, I'll bite. What's the price on a 12k Warn?

I paid 399 for the 12k xrc in 2010. It's done what I need.

I'd like snap on tools and boxes too but one has to prioritize.

BTW I also have two Warns and two Bradens...

Warn specs Philips Moly Low Temp #1 for most of their winches. Cat Arctic Moly will also work.

I find heavy grease not useful for my winch to free spool. I like using Aeroshell 33.

Warn used to call for Aeroshell 17 but it is no longer available.
