Default Yep, another one - '66 Mustang!

So I have managed YET AGAIN to come up with another project, as if all the others werent enough! Picked up a 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe, 200ci and 3 speed. It needs some work but mostly stuff just needs replacing and some TLC, not a bad start at all. Apparantly it was started to be restored some time ago and was vandalized (windows broken, etc), and the owner gave up on it. The tags are older then I am so its been sitting at least 15+, probably close to 20 years. I figured Id throw a battery in for laughs and it still turned over! No spark, so I cleaned off the points and that sure fixed the problem (remember to let go of the plug when testing for spark! ). Put a shot of starting fluid down the carb, cranked it over, and it fired right up first try! I went through and put all new rubber fuel lines in, and poured in some gas (which promptly went straight out the bottom of the tank) but I tried it out and itll sit there and run on its own. Stuck it in gear and actually drove it around a little bit, but I quickly found out there are no brakes! LOL So now Im just collecting parts and hoping to get the tank holding and the car running completely on its own, then work out the brakes. Maybe even throw some glass in and drive it! I just picked up a new waterpump and Im going to do an oil change tomorrow also.

So Im currently looking for the following parts now: gas tank, any glass, inline 6 fan. Could also use a drivers door, front valence, taillights, etc.

I'm pretty sure i still have my fan from mine and some glass, what glass do you need? I do have the rear end out of mine and it has brakes if you want the whole thing for free. I will look for all my old stuff.

Sadly all the glass got broke out, even the wing windows. Let me know what pieces you have, thanks!

Cool project!

That would be pretty neat to see. Put some glass in and drive it as it is, take it to shows like that even! Low buck fun.

Oh, I just noticed where those dents came from. Someone in the past not too careful with the forklift at some point while moving it!

There is a 9" on Craigslist with Disk brakes already.. I think the guy wanted like $400 for it and a D44 if I remember right, but that was this weekend.

WOW, check out that old 6x6 dump truck in the back ground! That would make a very nice flat bed project.

ooo.. yah I want to build on like that. I seen one on TV the guy made it front wheel drive with a Cadi Big block. Then he made the rear axle so it slides forward to let the flat bed lean back so you can load it.

Uhh sorry for the highjack.. Looks like the start of one hell of a project.

Leave it to the 4x4 guys to pick that out! Its a pretty sweet little truck, 50's Chevy AD body, 6x6 frame, someone added the dump bed sometime in its life. Its in getting a new clutch right now. Kinda rough but it works! If you look around theres a few other cool projects in the pics.

I bought a new waterpump and got that stuck on, replaced a heater hose, and I still need a new upper since someone stuck a cheapy flex hose on there and its leaking and too short anyways. Changed the oil also, didnt really look too bad, just old. Got the cap off the master cylinder and it holds and sucked in some fluids so I might attempt bleeding the brakes today. Also pulled the tank, threw in a tiny bit of gas, and wire brushed it down. Found 30-some-odd pinholes just with the brush! Most of them were just enough to see and didnt actually 'leak', but there were 2 good sized ones in there as well. I patched them up but there were so many I have my doubts about it holding for too long.

So I think Ill take you up on that offer. When would be a good time to pick it up?

Big thanks again for both you guys!!

Did a little bit more today, I actually have brakes now! I took the old single master cylinder off and got dual cylinder one from a 72(?) Ford truck, the rod depth was the same and it bolted right up. Did some line reconfiguring and a few pumps later the brakes held! Still need to bleed them and buy a new drum for the front but after that it will run, drive, and stop. I need to get another waterpump also, turns out I was sold a short shaft version and I need a long shaft, so Ill have to order that from Napa on monday and pick the radiator hose up then. I did find a fan that I think will work, but the only way to tell is with the new hose, pump, pulley, and spacer mounted. Guess Ill find out sometime this week. Also, I got a good set of rear tires mounted up, the fronts hold as well, but Im going to swap them out for a matching pair too.

Along with all that, Ill probably get the interior vaccumed out, rear seats set back in, and the gas tank mounted. Then Ill call around and see where I can get the best deal for a new front windshield.

Whew!

Got a little bit further today. Bled the rear brakes and they work, but it pulls HARD to the left when they are used. Still need a new front drum which is next on the list. Also got a new waterpump, it turns out that the engine is actually from an 80-82 Mustang and the pump is different then the older ones. Picked up the radiator hose, and got the right fan/pulley/spacer setup so that everything clears. Adjusted the clutch, shifter, and linkages so everything is a lot tighter and smoother. Still need some shift buttons but these will work for now, especially since they arent hard to change out. I vaccumed out the inside and pulled most of the carpet out. Also got the new tank installed, itll start, run, and idle completely on its own now. Got the air cleaner washed up and a new air filter installed. Oh! I slapped on a good set of tires as well.

Since I got the waterpump, hose, and fan all on, I took it out for a test drive down the road *cough* I mean driveway. I stuck it in 2nd and punched it, and man that little Inline 6 really gets with it, itll pull strong all the way to and even well past 65! Drives nice and smooth (and I havent even balanced the tires yet!) except the tranny makes a little noise. Im gonna check that and the rear axle fluid and make sure everythings topped off, or Ill most likely just change it altogether.

As a side note, all the gauges work so far except the battery gauge just sits in the middle? The alternator puts out 14.5v so it must be in the wiring somewhere.

Next up will be finishing off the brakes all around, and getting all the lights operational and new lenses, and probably new front and rear valence, both are pretty twisted up. And a new windshield! 65 is not fun when you are squinting to see!

Checked the trans and rear axle fluid today, both were at about half of where they should be. Found out the rear trans seal leaked, got that replaced. Also priced out a front windshield, 125$ from I believe Speedy Auto Glass in Wasilla was the cheapest I could find so far. Now I jusy need to price out a front drum so I can get all my brakes working!

And yes...that is daylight coming in through the floor. Anyone know where I can buy new shift buttons at?

thats funny, the only gauge that works in my car is the amp gauge, and of course the speedo, and when my car has been sitting and i drive it the amp gauge will bounce around a little, especially when my lights are on, my buddies 68 cougar does the same thing, but after its been running for awhile the gauge settles down, i really wish my gas gauge worked haha

Ah, I have fond memories of doing a lot of restro work on a 66'. Looks like ya got a good start there. And I can't remember the name of the guy down south that has EVERY part for those ya could possibly need. Looking forward to seeing it running around!

There is a guy locally here in Wasilla that has tons of parts 64.5-73. I also have a few resto-mod parts when you get to that point. Looks good!
