Default 78' Chevy step side

Starting with a 78' Chevy 2wd step side. It's in fair condition but could use fenders all the way around and rockers. Small block, th350.

It ran, but the snout of the crank was snapped. So the engine had to come out.

Already have a 350 that will be going in, I planned on leaving it stock other then intake and headers, but as always my plans change..
Picked up a Monte Carlo SS with a built sbc. Has aluminum heads (manufactured by brodix, marketed by Holley so they have Holley engraved on them) street dominator intake etc. but the engine has a bad bottom end supposedly. I Havnt tried turning it over to see if it's locked up or not.

I plan on using the top end parts from the Monte engine on the 350 going in the step side truck.

Edit: Nope! This is a current pic now. It's getting pretty close to just waiting on the engine and transmission!

Looks good nick. Including you I know 4 people with 2wd step side Chevys now. Will have to try getting everyone together for a cruise once your rigs done!

I need nice step side fenders if you know of any.
Ended up picking up another 78 2wd short bed so that's 3 now. I need to stop buying stuff.

I have that same problem. I picked up a T-boned 2000 Suburban today for $500 that has a very low mile (35K) GM factory crate engine, instead of rebuilding the Vortec I already have. Of course it comes with an entire rig attached to it, lol.

I'll keep an eye out for fenders, I do remember there was a guy selling a complete stepside bed on CL not too long ago, looked to be in nice shape in the pictures. I want to say it was blue? I'll see if I can find it again.

And I'm definitely down for a stepside cruise!

Finished it up (for now)
Took it for my first drive today

It's a total turd off the line, can hardly power brake on clean/dry pavement. Once the rpm's get up a bit it really wakes up and pulls pretty good for a mild 350. I'm blaming the old single plane intake & likely tall gears. If I were to keep this setup is likely need a little more stall and lower rear ratio. Will work for now tell I have the aluminum heads etc. on it.

Cought a little dirt on the pavement, once the rpm's get up a little it had no problem roasting the tires and doing some smokey donuts. Lots of fun!

Not sure if I'd go that low as its only a 3 speed.

Talked to the PO. Asked if he's ever been in the rear diff, and if so if it had a lsd or spool (chirps the tires while turning) turns out it has the good ol' Lincoln locker in it. guess it's been that way for years.

That'll certainly do it, haha.

I don't know what wheels you're planning on running, but I have a set of wagon wheels that came off of mine that you can have if you'd like. Pretty sure they're 15x8. Nothing fancy but they should give you a wider offset than the ones on there now.

I have a set of rally wheels and a stack of beauty rings that came off this van before I sent it to the crusher. Planned on cleaning them up and running them, but if there as tucked in as what I have now I'll be looking for something else.

Cool! Double check on the van wheels, if those are original you may have 15x7s.

Well I ended up selling the top end from the Monte. Got enough out of them to recoupe the cost for the whole car so I couldn't say no. I did notice it has a real nice SFI rated balancer on the front, the bores look PERFECT, dosnt even have a ridge at the top of the bore. Going to have to look into why it won't turn over.

So for now I'm just going to look for a better dual plane intake to replace my out dated single plane I have on it. May look into a mild cam at some point in time.

Now it's time to focus on body work.

Started on the bed. Got most the rust and debts fixed on this fender, and the bed rail smoothed out. Still have one rust spot to fix on this side.

crdude is Garrett.

This is Joe, I've been trying to get that 700R4 from you on Facebook. Did you sell it to Greg or what? I'd really like to grab it if you still have it.

You still trying to sell this truck?

Yup, crdude is Garrett. I replied to your comment on Facebook, feel free to give me a call any time. 9079829885

The end goal is to sell this yes. I picked up a rust free 78' short bed 2wd that is getting a big block. No sense in having three of these so the step side and the 76 short bed are for sale. No one will buy the **** thing so I figure for now I'll just fix it.
This is the one getting the big block, looks bad because the front end parts are removed and multi colored, but it's totally rust free.
Already have the BBC, th350 and had new TC built for it. Still need to pick up some headers then it's just a matter of finding time to get around to it now.

Rather then a vortec short block I now have a complete vortec 350 sitting on my engine stand.

So this is what I have for it as of now.

350 vortec, will be nice having the roller cam and of course much better heads

I'm going to "borrow" the vortec style dual plane air gap intake from my chevelle sense it won't be ready to run for a few more years..

Figure I'll use my demon 750 double pumper rather then the old edelbrock.

And now I'll install my msd 6al box and my adjustable rev limiter dial.

I'll keep the current long tune headers of course.

Not sure what a carbed vortec with these bolt ons will make for power, but it can't be worse then what I already had.

Still need to figure out what I'm going to do for a fuel pump & regulator.

a 750 is a hell of a lot of carb on a 350.
