Default Derby car Build

Well its a 4x4 network, but maybe some of you will find interest or humor in a demo derby car build? With a little luck I'll spike some interest and get a few of you in the mix to get car counts up making for a bigger better derby!!!!
The 2016 Car.
Headers I just finished building.
Start of my custom shifter.

I'd love to compete but with a back in bad shape I'd be worried about leaving in a wheelchair after a hard hit.

Its been a few years since I ran a car!! Last one I did was small cars on 4th of July out in Willow, had my hands on a 1986 Mazda 626 2 door. It was one of the bigger cars, but I was within wheelbase by just an inch or so....

I could be tempted to do another small car derby, but logistics and funds are going to work against me this year..

Since there seems to be some interest and I didn't get flamed for posting this build, I guess I'll try to keep it updated.
Here is pics of the old pig stripped out. Earlier car pics were of when I got the car early in Dec.
Hope to get alot done this weekend, but waiting on a few parts will keep me from getting the motor in like I hoped.
As most see on my other thread--Radiator is going to be my current nemesis...Expecting to have to shorten drive shaft to, but hopefully that won't be too bad?

Not sure yet. Since fair cancelled last year we promoted it in September so it didn't die. Word is they want it back since we were very successful. I have email out to fair now to figure it out--awaiting their response. We paid out 9K and gave away 50 bikes to kids. Fair has to do the same or more--we proved it could be done.
Worst case there is Willow derby labor and memorial days. They paid out 5K which is a massive improvement, but they post rules and don't stick to them.
Also should be a derby in Fairbanks in Aug.
Small cars and trucks is another possibility. I have 1 truck built and waiting for another run; ran two years ago and nothing last year. Also have another truck I can build or I need to unload--tired of it sitting here.

Slow going. Easy to see I'm not a big mechanic. That's why I do this--To learn..
Headers on and motor ready to go in.
Motor tranny combo wasn't going over the top, so I made a path.

In discussions and its looking like Derby will be 2 Sep @ 7PM during the State Fair again.

Well I hit a big roadblock last weekend.
400 came out of the wagon and it turns out my 440 won't just drop in. I need to notch crossmemeber to allow for oil pan clearance or find new Mopar big block mid sump oil pan. Looking for pan, but the one I need is pretty specific.
Of course the tranny mounts don't line up either, but I can fab that.
My headers hit the brake booster so I had to cut it out and fab brake pedal straight to brake cylinder mounted directly to fire wall.
I thought steering box was going to hit headers too, but thinking that will clear, but its gonna be tight.

Why can't stuff just line up and go smoothly.

Sucks it's during the fair. Having to pay $30+ to watch isn't cool.

Derby, that chain of events is what I ran into when I wanted to swap the 4 speed trans in my dump truck for a 5 speed Overdrive out of a deuce and a half, I found the adapters for the trans to engine, then I would have to shorten the drive shaft, then find a PTO, to drive the hydraulic pump, the ONLY PTO that works is $1300, so switch to an engine driven pump, about the same costs for hoses, fittings, brackets, pullies and belts. Decided the 4 speed wasn't so bad........

Good luck with your build!

VERY tight fit but she's in. On to shortening driveshaft, fabbing in tranny mount, fabbing shifter, etc.

Here is some pics. I know my welds aren't pretty...lol

Hopefully I resized these pics right.

If the radiator you want to use is metal, repair is pretty simple. If you need help , call me. Never tried to repair any of the composite tanked radiators, but I suppose there are methods to do it.

There's a radiator guy in anchorage across the street from aih on old Seward that repaired a composit tanked radiator for me. One of my composit barbs broke off. He ended up charging me about $70. It looked like they only put some in weld on a brass barb. He also cleaned the radiator also.

Thanks Shack. VERY minor leak at the top of what you did I may re-solder later, but other than that good to go. Thanks again.

I got her running Sunday. Runs rough and brakes are sticking, but it runs and moves....lol

If you want, bring it back, found my high buck radiator pressure tester, (the bicycle inner tube) so we can test it. No additional charge, LOL

Update is flywheel had missing tooth. Had to order a new torque convertor.
This was discovered as I couldn't get it running hardly at all after that initial start up.
I ended up pulling motor and welded a lil more up front--was worried about that box cut.
While motor was out I put new plugs, rotor and cap and washed the motor. Also found a massive vacuum leak, which I am thinking is why it wouldn't run right. (Vacuum went to choke)
Probably won't get motor back in until next weekend.
Fingers crossed she fires up and runs good.
