There is a Rokon fanatic around the corner from me here in Wasilla. He makes custom, take-down frames for them (to make them aircraft pack-able), repowers them with little Honda-copy motors, and has a pristine, "concours" one in his living room. He even casts new aluminum covers and such. Want one?

Last time I saw one in a yard was like 5 or 6 years ago in Seward - it looked like hell and they want $3500 for it. The "reman" ones look like a much better rig, especially with the 4-stroke Honda, instead of the buzzy little 2-stroke they came with. Some of the wheels are hollow, so you can float, or fill them with fuel or whatever. I don't know how much he want's for his - I know the motor costs like 7 or 800, and he has some special parts he casts for them, and so on. I'd bet it's 3 or 4 thousand. They do climb like crazy, and because they can sidehill, can follow just about ANY game trail. Kind of a neat machine.

There is one crusin' around on the tundra up here is Point Lay. Pretty simple setup. Small engine drives an electric motor, and two chains drive the front and rear axles. If it can survive village life, it's must be bombproof

Unless the guy is running a generator from the PTO option, yes PTO, then it has no electic 'motor'. You're prob seeing the front diff with the disk brake on the side and think it's a motor - I did too when I saw one. The bike has an ouput shaft running forward through the frame. There's a double joint in the steering column that drives that diff > sprocket > front wheel.

.....and unlike the older bikes, the newer ones are all hydraulic brakes, so no more stretched or seased break lines, and no more cranky, loud 2stroke motors: 5HP honda, or 6.8HP Koler.

I've met prob 30-40 folks that have had them; some of these folks' bikes were 30 years old and supposedly still ran - so yes I'd say the bikes 45 year old liniage is proving itself rather long lasting.

Rokon! There is a name I didn't expect to hear again in my lifetime! I used to have an RT 340. They tried to make a motocrosser back in the day. Had OK power and would climb hills like nothing else with the variable clutch but the suspension absolutely sucked, it was about 50lbs beyond heavy and wouldn't cross water. Did I mention it handled poorly? It would tank slap in a heart beat and hurt you if you tried to leave contact with Mother Earth. Besides, who could claim to have a full sac of balls when you had to pull start your motorcycle? LOL!

While I'm sure that these are not the same motocrosser, they are still pullstart, they don't have ANY suspension besides the quishy tires and sprung seat, and they also don't like leaving earth. But having something that will haul 1000lbs and only weights 180lbs aint that bad. Did I meantion it's rated to out-tow my Bombardier 800 twin? < -- traction is arguable : )

Thats why I saw one parked on the sidewalk on Old Seward! I might have to check out these things, I remember seeing mail in ads in old Popular Mechanics magazines for these things years ago. Always looked kinda cool in their own reguards.

Niko is correct, 6k is the usual figure for one. Though they do outlast wheelers in most cases by 10 years at least. I don't know how many folks we've met that have and use their 30 year old rokons still.
